World Animal Day

On October 4, the world celebrates World Animal Day — a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility toward all living beings, whether domestic, wild, or farm animals.

This day has its roots in the legacy of Saint Francis of Assisi, known for his compassion and love for all sentient creatures.

What about Belgium?
In Belgium, 58% of households live with a pet. Cats (32%) slightly outnumber dogs (31%), and together they represent far more than just a statistic.
In fact, Belgians spend nearly €3.5 billion per year on their animal companions (Sources: Petfood Nation, Brussels Times).

But beyond affection lies responsibility.
Since 2024, animal welfare has been enshrined in the Belgian Constitution — a historic milestone.
In Wallonia, an official ownership permit is now required to adopt an animal.
In Flanders, the new Animal Welfare Codex introduces stronger protections, including clear bans on animal markets and home slaughter (Source: Wallonie.be).

This day serves as an important reminder:
Loving an animal isn't just about cuddles. It's about protecting them, respecting their needs, and speaking up for those who have no voice.
